Vitinya Tunnel on Hemus Motorway Reopens to Traffic after Renovation

Vitinya tunnel on Hemus motorway is reopened for traffic from 20th of September after more than a year of repair. Earleir, the Minister of Regional Development Nikolai Nankov carried out a check on the quality of the construction works.

Over 22 million BGN was the cost of the repair of the nearly two kilometers of Vitinya tunnel. It started on 27 June 2016.

For the peiod of the repair, the cladding of the tunnel was completely replaced and its walls were reinforced. A completely new asphalt surface, marking and waterproofing has been put in place. The whole electrical system was changed and 375 new LED lamps were installed. New fire protection and fire detection equipment has been installed.

New ventilation system was introduced in the tunnel with 15 fans that automatically switch on when air pollution rises above limit values.


Minister Nankov explained that 6 tunnel tubes on Hemus motorway will be repaired.

Next Monday, the twin-tube of Vitinya tunnel will be closed for repair, which, according to the Road Infrastructure Agency, will last for nearly 2 months.

The director of the road agency, Doncho Atanasov, specified that the repair of the left tube of Echemiska tunnel is most urgent.

The renovation of the viaducts on the Hemus motorway in Stara Planina mou8ntain section will also continue.
