VISIT OF EUROPEAN EXPERTS, WHO WILL INSPECT THE WORK OF BULGARIA’S PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE, HAS BEEN POSTPONED FOR SEVERAL WEEKS

The visit of the European experts, who will make an independent analysis of the work of the Bulgarian Prosecutor’s office, is postponed for a few weeks, the Bulgarian Ministry of Justice said on 30th of May.

Prosecutors from the UK, Germany, Spain and Holland were expected to arrive on Monday in order to hold interviews with representatives of various Bulgarian organizations and to examine the legal framework of the Bulgarian prosecution.

The task of the experts is to gather opinions about the structural and functional model of the state prosecution – hierarchy, specialized structures, integrity, transparency and work load.

The mission has to make an assessment on the impact of the amendments to the Law on Judiciary System and the draft amendments to the Penal Procedure Code and the Penal Code, as well as the new anti-corruption law.

The experts will also review the work of the prosecution on several specific cases.

Due to continuing work on the terms of reference at expert level, the visit of the four experts, who are meant to make the analysis, has been postponed for several weeks.

Meanwhile, the regular expert mission of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) headed by the Deputy Secretary-General of the European Commission Paraskevi Michou began on Monday, 30th of May. Meetings with representatives of all relevant institutions will take place on Monday and Tuesday, 31st of May.
