TOMB OF THRACIAN PRINCESS WARRIOR DISCOVERED

A tomb of Thracian warrior princess was discovered in the summer of 2013 during excavation works of a tumulus in the village of Brestovitsa, in the region of Borovo, near the North Bulgarian city of Rousse. The find was kept secret in order to prevent treasure-hunting raids. The research was carried out by a team led by the archeologist Varbin Varbanov.

Associate professor Dr. Nikolai Nenov, the director of the Museum of History in Rousse says that the remains of the princess contained objects and ornaments – silver coated ear-muffs, a spear, a knife and a fibula. Dr. Nenov who was at the excavations says that the body was laid in a tomb made from wooden material. The research team revealed decomposed wood shaped as a funerary chamber. Burial gifts and weapons were found next to the skeleton. Dr. Nenov says the find is uncommon.

There was a large number of tumili in the region of Borovo. The tomb of the Thracian princess is connected with another famous find – the silver treasure of Borovo. According to Dr. Nenov, the ruling dynasty at the time is likely to be the same people who later owned the silver treasure of Borovo.

Archeologists say that the Thracian princess warrior was buried in the period V-IV century Before Christ.
