The reinforcement of the road to Rila Monastery began on 20th of August. The repair activities are expected to last about two months.
Rocks and earth mass will be removed In the troubled stretch of the road to Rila Monastery, after which a safety net will be placed to prevent new stones from falling on the roadway. By reinforcing the landslide, the roadway will be released for traffic to ensure the safety of passing cars and pedestrians.
During the repairs, the two-way traffic will be reduced to one lane. There will be temporary restrictions for several hours a day. The traffic will be regulated by signals, policemen and employees from the company, which repairs the road.
However, the actions that are being taken today are a temporary solution to the problem. In order the site to be fully secured, a project will be prepared and actions will be taken in order to permanently reinforce and restore the road. Funding will be sought from the Interdepartmental Commission for Reconstruction and Assistance, but this is expected to take place next year at the earliest. Until then, the cost of strengthening the landslide will be at the expense of Current Traffic Situation.
