Sofia Mayor unveils draft strategy for future development of the capital city

The Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, announced on June 2 that today or tomorrow she will submit to the Sofia Municipal Council the long-term strategy for the development of Sofia.

It concerns the development of the city for the next decades and is entitled: "Vision for Sofia".

The Mayor said that after the submission, the draft will be discussed in the commissions of the municipality.

It will be used in the elaboration of the General Spatial Development Plan of Sofia, she said.

The strategic document "Vision for Sofia" has 24 long-term goals, with 230 key steps, 375 specific measures, which are distributed from 2020 to 2050.

"This document will be adopted in 2 stages. The first contains the long-term part with the five priorities - compactness, adaptability. The second part is short-term, including the measures in the period, specific work, projects, sites we set, this part is much more specific. We propose that the Council adopt the long-term part first. I hope that by the end of 2020 we will have a task so that we can work on the amendment of the General Spatial Development Plan of Sofia from next year," Yordanka Fandakova added.

The mayor pointed out that it is very important for her to achieve unification - not only among the citizens, but also of all political forces in the Sofia Municipal Council, so that the city has a very clear plan for the coming years.

Sofia's chief architect Zdravko Zdravkov expressed confidence that they would adopt a strategic document outlining the next measures for Sofia's development.

"The ultimate objective is to improve the quality of life in the city. People expect simple things, expect to have an improvement in their mobility, to improve their well-being, their health environment, their way of security. Simple and clear things that need to be related to a change in the way of planning ", he commented and specified that as a result of the public consultations and meetings with the NGOs these 24 goals have been set, behind which there are specific measures.

According to him, from 1989 until today Sofia has been transformed from an industrial city into a city where he the capital was managed, and now into a city of cars, and now we should turn it into a city for the people, he added.

The head of the "Vision" team, Lyubomir Georgiev, pointed out that his team had calculated how much the population of the capital would grow.

"If everything that is allowed is built up, another 1 million people can settle in Sofia, which we do not want. This is a very strong argument to reduce the parameters in the Spatial Plan," he commented and stressed that the big wave of people coming to live to Sofia has already subsided because there are other competing cities in the country, as well as the opportunity for people to go and live abroad.

"We do not expect the population of Sofia to change significantly, i.e. it will remain around 1.5 million as it is at the moment," he explained.
