Scientists discuss numerical weather forecasting at a workshop in Sofia

From September 30 to October3, Bulgaria’s National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) will host one of the most significant events in Europe in the area of numerical weather models - the European Working Group on Limited Area Models meeting and Short Range Numerical Weather Prediction meeting.

90 scientists from 30 countries from 4 continents (Europe, Africa, Asia and North America) will hold in-depth discussions on various topics and aspects related to the development of numerical weather forecasts such as data assimilation, ensemble forecasts, parameterisation of various physical processes in the atmosphere, forecasting and more.

This prestigious forum annually brings together scientists from the six European Consortiums for Numerical Weather Forecasting (ALADIN, COSMO, HIRLAM, LACE, SEECOP, UKMO) and the European Centre for Medium-Term Forecasting, giving them the opportunity to exchange experience and information on how to improve their numerical models and their higher precision.

For 25 years, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology has been a member of the ALADIN consortium led by the French Meteorological Service and Bulgarian scientists have participated in the development of the model. The main objective is to make meteorological and hydrological early warning products more effective and to improve the forecast of dangerous meteorological phenomena.

NIMH scientists working in the field of numerical weather forecasting annually at this forum present the results of their work to colleagues from other meteorological services.
