Third pit of dumped hazardous waste discovered near Cherven Bryag

The illegal waste found dumped in the area of Cherven Bryag and the village of Ruptsi, district of Pleven, which by external description can be described as hazardous, is more than 120 tonnes.

The initial analysis shows that this is only about 1/3 of the total amount of buried waste generated by companies owned or related to the pre-trial proceedings, in which the brothers Atanas and Plamen Bobokovi are defendants, the Specialized Prosecutor's Office announced on July 3.

In the course of the inspection, a third place was discovered with pits, which served for storage of illegal waste, which was not established in terms of quantity and content. The area is protected and actions are underway to establish the origin of the waste.

The previous actions, which started two days ago, established that at the moment hazardous waste has been stored in the open silage pits, including parts of batteries buried about 4-5 years ago, which are not subject to further processing.

Some of the waste is rechargeable batteries imported from Slovakia and Romania.

Two days ago, low levels of radiation were measured in the area, which, according to experts, are not dangerous for human health and for the environment.

The actions of the prosecutor's office on the investigation, as well as on the establishment of other locations of illegally buried waste continue, the prosecutor’s office said.
