Quality of drinking water of Sofia among the highest in the EU

By 2021, Sofiyska Voda (Sofia Water Company) will introduce a more modern method of purifying drinking water from organic pollutants by UV treatment. This was announced by the new company executive director Vassil Trenev on 15^th of June. This way, the water coming from the Iskar Dam will be purified.

The rays will influence the DNA of the microorganisms and they will not be able to multiply afterwards. At present, Sofia is in sixth place in terms of water quality in the European Union.

Pre-chlorination is used in the waste water treatment plants, after which the water passes through sand filters, Vessela Stefanova, senior manager from the purification laboratory said. Coagulating agent is used as necessary, for further fine particle purification, then to an exit station the water is again disinfected by gas-chlorine to remove even the tiniest pollutant. The Sofiyska Voda Laboratory controls all the stages of purification of the water that comes into and out of the treatment plants, she added.

700 tests and about 12,000 water quality analyses are made per month for the quality of drinking water and water for household purposes. There are no heavy metals or radioactive substances in the drinking water of Sofia, and no uranium, the company says and the chlorides are 20 times lower than the norm.
