President of Bulgarian Football Union, Borislav Mihailov, resigned

The president of the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) Borislav Mihailov resigned on October 15. The resignation will be presented to the members of the Executive Committee at the meeting on Friday, a statement on the BFU website says. The information was also confirmed for BNT.

His position is a consequence of the current tensions in recent days - a situation that is detrimental to the Bulgarian football and the Bulgarian Football Union.

After many years in the post and with his many contacts at a high international level, Mihailov expresses his firm readiness to continue to assist in the development of Bulgarian football in every way, the BFU said.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Borisov ordered that the government suspends relations, including financial ones, with the BFU until Mihailov resigned. The reason was the result of the Bulgaria – England football match from last night and the appearing of Bulgaria as a racist country on the front pages of the press.

The Minister of Sports, Krassen Kralev, also demanded the resignation of the head of the Bulgarian Football Union Borislav Mihailov.

Bulgarian national team was defeated 6:0 by England in a match, which was twice halted because of racist behaviour.

The match was stopped twice and came close to being called off as Bulgarians fans directed racist abuse at England's players.
