PM Boyko Borissov Welcomed European Leaders at Informal Dinner in Sofia

On the eve of the EU-Western Balkans Summit, European leaders from EU Member States gathered in Sofia Tech Park at an informal dinner under the motto "Digital Europe - Research and Innovation". It was organized at the invitation of Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, and hosted by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov on 16th of May.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov welcomed the European Council President, Donald Tusk; the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker; the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini and all 27 leaders of the EU member state.

Main focus in the talks was the decision by US President Donald Trump to withdraw the United States from the Iranian nuclear programme agreement and the consequences for Europe.

Reports about Iran were presented by French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The President of the European Commission presented data on the possible impact on EU companies as a result of the US decision. He has also spoke about the progress on the Washington talks on the issue of customs duties.

Donald Tusk noted the EU's readiness to respond in a proportionate way if the US temporary concessions were dropped. The situation in the Middle East, the relations with Israel and the bloodshed after the relocation of the US embassy in Jerusalem were also among the topics discussed.

Part of the talks were also devoted to the digitization, which is becoming more and more important to the 500 million European citizens.

Before the end of the dinner, each of the European leaders wrote messages on the table in front of them as a symbolic sign of this historic meeting in Sofia. The table which is made of panels of innovative recycled cardboard, will be disassembled and the boards with the messages framed and displayed in a special place dedicated to the first Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU.
