PM Borissov reported to Parliament the accomplishments of Bulgarian Presidency

Speaking in Parliament on 13th of July, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov reported the accomplishments of the first Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU.

The opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party put s series of harsh criticism to the PM.

He said the Presidency was "a test of our European identity and we showed that we understand the European priorities and showed responsibility and professionalism”.

Borissov reported the results regarding the Western Balkans as one of the greatest achievements. He also noted that the results of the Bulgarian Presidency are not part of a PR campaign, but are a reality for the countries in the region. Borissov also pointed out the EU-Turkey meeting, which took place in Varna and the achieved in terms of the reunification of the European partners to continue the dialogue with Turkey and reduce tensions. He also reported work on the Posted Workers Directive, as well as border guards and the Dublin agreement.

The emphasis on the European perspectives and connectivity of the Western Balkans was a signature achievement of the Bulgarian Presidenc, PM said. This topic was immediately acknowledged as a pan-European responsibility and our efforts were supported by all. Concurrently, we have shown both our European partners and the Western Balkans that solving the accumulated problems and contradictions can be achieved through dialogue and acceptable compromises. As an example, we gave the treaty with the Republic of Macedonia, today we also have the result of the talks between Greece and Macedonia, and from yesterday - an official invitation by NATO to Macedonia to join the pact.

The socilsists said the presidency was a good opportunity for Europe and for Bulgaria, but this opportunity, they say, has been wasted. They also pointed out that there was no consensus among the institutions. MRF also spoke about “war between institutions”. The United Patriots, junior partner in the coalition government, said the opposition’s criticism was not grounded and gave a good assessment of the achievements of the Bulgarian Presidency. "Volya" party also gave a good assement, but criticised one of the government partners - IMRO.
