One in Ten Babies in Bulgaria is Born Prematurely

A prematurely born baby, weighing 490 grams, was rescued by the team of the Neonatal Ward in the city of Rousse, North Bulgaria.

According to statistics, premature births in Bulgaria are increasing. One in ten pregnancies in Bulgaria ends in preterm birth.

Every year, the specialists in Rousse Obstetric and Gynecological Hospital look after more than 160 premature babies. The 490-gram-born baby girl was transported to the pediatric hospital in Sofia and after two months, the baby now weighs a kilogramme and a half. Premature children are more vulnerable and predisposed to infections and complications, doctors say. Therefore, they are given special care, including kangaroo care.

Doctor Lilyana Tashokova explains that the cangaroo care has a very good effect and helps the baby experience closeness with the mother.

According to her, the reasons for increasing the number of premature babies are various diseases of the mother or problems during pregnancy. She said that complications are possible. The most common are affecting the child's neurological development, including damages to eye-sight, hearing, chronic lung disease.
