More than 10,000 cases of speeding have been registered during a speed control operation carried out by Bulgaria’s traffic police on the roads of the country. Most of the violations were identified by the cameras. Police also reported less road accidents as a result of the enhanced checks.
More than 150 cameras were installed and 300 police officers were deployed on the roads across the country for the purposes of the operation.
More than 2,000 more violations have been identified, compared with last year’s operation results.
The largest number of speeding were registered in Sofia and Veliko Turnovo, and the smallest number were in Montana and Yambol.
Rossen Rapchev, Head of Traffic Police unit in the National Police Chief Directorate said that motorists should continue to drive carefully as the operation is running until the end of the week. The speed control was enhanced as much as possible in the latest 24 hours, he explained.
The specialised police operation for speed enforcement will run for a week from Monday 1 to Sunday 7 April.
It is part of the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL) control week “Speed” and similar operations will be conducted on the territory of all member states, the Ministry of Interior announced.
The aim is to draw attention to the fact that excessive speed is still one of the most common causes for serious road accidents with the largest number of injuries and deaths.
