MPs on 25th of April approved at first reading the new law on oil-bearing rose. The texts are proposed by the Council of Ministers and their purpose is to create a single national regulation for the production and processing of oil-bearing rose to guarantee the quality of Bulgarian rose oil.
So far, there is no legal framework regulating the production and processing of roses, but massive plantations with unclear and varied varieties, different economic qualities and overproduction of pink color require its creation.

The bill provides for farmers to grow only certified seeds and the relationship between producers and processors will be regulated through the conclusion of contracts for the purchase of the rose blossoms.
The law was supported by the GERB government, but their coalition partners appeared to have different opinions on it.
"We will not support the law because there was no dialogue between the ruling party GERB and the United Patriots," Jordan Apostolov from NFSB said during the debates. He even urged the bill to be withdrawn so that all stakeholders could participate in the drafting.
In turn, the chair of the agriculture committee Dessislava Taneva reminded that there is enough time between the two readings to suggest specific texts to be discussed with all stakeholders.
The bill also provides for the requirements to the production and labeling of rose oil products and the production of a product with a protected geographical indication "Bulgarian Rose Oil".
The establishment of a consultative council on oil-bearing rose by the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry is also envisaged to advise the minister on the implementation of the state policy on rose and rose processing and to assist him in solving problems in the sector.
