Supreme Judicial Council submitted its approval of Ivan Geshev as Chief Prosecutor to the President on October 25.

After a 10 hour hearing on October 24, the 25-member Supreme Judicial Council, voted in Ivan Geshev for a seven-year term with 20 votes in favour and 4 against.

The nomination is subject to approval by Bulgaria’s head of state, President Roumen Radev. If confirmed, he will issue a Decree for the appointment of Geshev.

According to the constitution, the head of state can reject the candidate only once. If the Supreme Judicial Council submits the same candidacy again, he is obliged to sign the Decree.

President Radev will be introduced to the SJC decision after he returns from his visit to Japan. His actions will be in accordance with the Bulgarian constitution, the President’s press office told BNT.

Geshev’s nomination drew a series of protests over the past months, with thousands of people taking to the streets to express their opposition. Other protests were in support of Geshev.
