The international sand sculpting festival “Ruse Sand Fest – 2016” starts on 27th of May on the pier in the city of Ruse, situated on the bank of the Danube river in North of Bulgaria. The theme of this year’s edition, “Sports Fame, World and Olympic Symbols” is dedicated to the campaign “Ruse - European City of Sport 2016”.

The festival is organized by the municipality in Ruse and “Ruse - Free Spirit City” Municipal Foundation.

“I hope this year the festival will be even more successful thanks to the rich and attractive accompanying programme, which will turn the second edition of the forum into a holiday by the river side," the Mayor of Ruse, Plamen Stoilov, said.

Famous sculptors such as Sudarsan Patnayk from India, Benoit Dyuterazh from France, Alexander Knysh from Russia, Andras Viski from Hungary, Andrei Molokov of Chuvashia will take part in the festival.

Bulgaria will be represented by Daniel Kanchev from Ruse, Svetlozar Lisichkov from Sofia and Kaloyan Todorov from Bourgas. Each is a laureate from numerous sculpture symposia and international artistic events.

The consultants of the festival are Ruslan Korovkov from Russia and Irina Taflevskaya from Ukraine.

700 tonness of sand have been delivered on the bank of the Danube River for the creation of the compositions.

The sand sculptures will feature compositions and shapes from water sports, tennis, hockey, gymnastics, figure skating, football and sumo.

A sand sculpting academy will take place within the days of the festival. Young sculptors will create smaller shapes under the guidance of more experienced artists. In addition, seven kinder gardens have applied to participate in the sand sculpting workshop for children. Four of them are preparing a joint project to build a sand mosaic with the logo of the campaign “Ruse – European Sports City”.

A sand bar will work during the days of the event. The festival will also offer a rich musical programme with many concerts and an open-air cinema.

The award giving ceremony will be held on 3rd of June and will be followed by a concert entitled “BG Rock Legends”.

A workshop for children will take place on 4th of June, the final day of the festival, with the participation of Bate Encho, a famous host of a children TV show “Who is Better, Best”, followed by a concert by Rositsa Kirilova.
