Bulgarias Prime Minister and Russian Ambassador Discussed Bilateral Relations

At a meeting with Russian Ambassador Anatoly Makarov on 25th of May, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov raised the issue of the statement by the Russian President Putin, who said that the Slavic alphabet came to Russia from Macedonian lands. The Russian President made the statement at a meeting with his Macedonian counterpart, Gjorge Ivanov, held in Moscow on 24th of May.

The meeting between PM Borissov and the Russian ambassador Makarov was scheduled well in advance and was not specifically related to Putin's statement, the Bulgarian government's press office said. During the talks, the Prime Minister noted that such statements on 24th of May, which was a public holiday in Bulgaria, provoked sharp reactions among Bulgarian citizens.

At the meeting, Borissov showed a plaque of old Pliska (the ancient capital of the First Bulgarian Empire (632/680-1018 AD), recalling where the foundations of Christianity in the Slavonic lands started. Borisov has also told about the investments made by the Bulgarian state for the restoration of the Great Basilica in Pliska, where the disciples of St. Cyril and St. Methodius - St. Clement of Ohrid and Angelarius - wrote the first books in Cyrillic.

The Prime Minister also reminded that the creation of the Cyrillic alphabet was created by the will of and the participation of the Bulgarian state during the reign of the Bulgarian ruler, Knyaz Boris I Mihail. According to Borissov, this is undoubted contribution of Bulgaria to the European and world culture. He has said that even nowadays, the alphabet created on Bulgarian soil is used by dozens of nations worldwide, including some inhabiting the territory of the Russian Federation. Borissov said that this was underlined by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia during his official visit In Bulgaria in his meeting with President Plevneliev in April 2012.

After the meeting, the Russian ambassador responded laconically to journalistic questions about the statement of the Russian President yesterday.

Makarov said that on 24th of May, he attended all the events dedicated to the national holiday of the Slavic script. “I was at the monument, I laid flowers. For us, this is a shared holiday and we celebrate it together with the Bulgarian people,“ Makarov said.

Answering a BNT question about his personal opinion of the origin of the Cyrillic alphabet, he said that the brothers Cyril and Methodius created the alphabet and “we celebrate the holiday here and in Moscow”.

"This is a holiday of the Bulgarian and the Russian nation and I, as I said earlier, took part in the celebrations. Russia has been and will be with Bulgaria, and in this case too. We also celebrate this holiday," Makarov added. "Prime Minister Borissov and I discussed this as one of the topics that were part of our common agenda."

Borissov and Makarov discussed the development of bilateral relations, focusing on the opportunities to broaden and deepen them. Commercial and economic relations, tourism, energy projects in Bulgaria, and more specifically the European gas hub Balkan, were on the meeting's agenda, as well as seeking a private investor for Belene nuclear plant.
