Government to draft a position on the move to strip Hungary of EU voting rights

The Bulgarian government will draft a position opposing the imposition of sanctions on Hungary for violation of the rule of law, the relevant deputy prime ministers from the quota of the United Patriots, Krasimir Karakachanov and Valeri Simeonov, said on 19^th of September. In their view, Bulgaria should clearly support Hungary for its position on illegal migration and the right of member states to make sovereign decisions.

The European Parliament's decision to trigger Article 7 of the EU Treaty against Hungary, which may strip the country from its EU voting rights, is tendentious and has been taken for ideological reasons, according to the junior collation partner, the United Patriots. According to them, their suggestion that Bulgaria take a position against this decision was voted unanimously at 19^th of September government meeting.

According to the patriots, the EP's decision is directed against the sovereign right of states to make decisions.

Krassimir Karakachanov, Deputy Prime Minister for Public Order and Security: What is being done on Hungary and attempts to impose it on Poland is a repressive measure. The arguments are the same as the ones used by USSR in 1956. Hungary is said to have violated the common European values and repressive measures are introduced against a state, for which a group of liberal politicians claim to be authoritarian. 70% of the population in Hungary voted for Orban, investments there are the highest in Europe.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Valeri Simeonov, Bulgaria should support Hungary also because of the large Bulgarian community that lives there and takes part in the governance.
