GERB will Alert Bulgaria’s Chief Prosecutor about Tsankov Kamuk Project

GERB Parliamentary Group will submit an alert to Bulgaria’s Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov about the Triple Coalitions’s mega hydropower project “Tsankov Kamuk”, GERB MP Alexander Nenkov said in Varna on 11^th of August.

The Tsankov Kamak Hydro Power Plant needs repairing 7 years after it was put into operation. Significant amounts of water have been found to leak into the ground. There is no bursting on the wall or the dam, there is a rupture of the geomembrane put at the bottom, representatives of the National Electricity Company (NEC) explained.

The hydro-power plant, which includes a dam and hydroelectric power plant, was put into operation in 2010.

Deputy Minister of Energy Zhecho Stankov said that Tsankov Kamuk was initially set to cost 440 million BGN but the amount soared to nearly a billion in the end.

Stankov noted that the Tsankov Kamuk hydroelectric power station is also losing money because it operates for not more than 40-50 days a year. In his words, it will take at least 100 years before there is a return on the investment in the project.

The repair will cost 80,000 BGN, Petar Iliev, the Executive director of NEC said.The rupture was identified during a planned check, which is done every five year, Iliev added. He also commented that the prosecutor's office is in a position to do a check into the construction of the dam, which was very expensive, but generates very little power.
