First sod of the building for the Supercomputer in Sofia

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov attended the first sod of the building, which will house the most powerful supercomputer in Sofia Tech Park. The value of the project is over 14 m euros, provided by Brussels and the national budget.

The ceremony was attended by the EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Maria Gabriel, cabinet ministers and the mayor of Sofia.

The Prime Minister emphasized the government's efforts to build the supercomputer in Bulgaria.

Borissov thanked Brussels for the provided funds.

" Bulgaria also participates with BGN 16 million in this project. We are proud of what we are launching today," said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.

The Prime Minister gave his support for the project during the Bulgarian presidency of the council of the EU in 2018, at an international conference on the digital future of Europe.

In just one year, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe will be built, with a 64 core processor and 6.2 petaflops performance.

"With its huge power, the supercomputer in Bulgaria will be able to make billions of operations, comparisons and conclusions within an hour. The heat generated by it will be used to heat neighbouring buildings. After its construction, Bulgaria will establish itself as a digital hub in the region. The value of the whole project is 18 million euros. We competed with countries from all over Europe for the supercomputer, because it will remain for generations to come." Prime Minister Boyko Borissov wrote on his Facebook page.
