The former mayor of Haskovo (South Bulgaria) Georgi Ivanov was sentenced to two years of imprisonment conditionally, with a three and a half years of probation period. Ivanov was accused because in his capacity of an official, he ordered in May 2015 to demolish a listed building - the former prison in the city.
The former mayor is sentenced to also pay a fine of BGN 3,000.
The court case started in July 2016. More than 30 witnesses, experts, officials in the municipal and regional administration were interviewed. The case was repeatedly postponed.
Former Mayor of Haskovo on 16th of November gave explanations, pointing out that the documentation received in the town hall did not describe the building as listed.
The decision of the Haskovo District Court is subject to appeal within 15 days before the Court of Appeals in Plovdiv.
