EPP Leaders Discuss Western Balkans Inclusion in the EU

The right-wing political family appreciated the successes of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU and Prime Minister Boyko Borissov. The focus of the EPP leaders is not only on the inclusion of the Western Balkans, but also on the problems Europe faces.

Among these issues, Borissov outlined Brexit, the US decision on the Iranian nuclear programme, whether Italy would leave the eurozone, as well as tensions in the Middle East. Boyko Borissov also said that there are no risks to Europe from the inclusion of the Western Balkans and expressed hope that here in Sofia the presidents of Serbia and Kosovo would shake hands and show that the Balkans are no less civilized than the two Koreas.

Boyko Borissov, Prime Minister of Bulgaria: Thank you for the good evaluation and I want to say that today, at this forum, we are not talking about left and right, we are not talking about political parties. I am grateful to all colleagues from all political parties throughout the European Union, including the six from the Western Balkans, that they accepted the invitation and all came here today. So, it is a success for Bulgaria, of the Bulgarian people and I, on behalf of the people, thank for being all here.

We are in Sofia in relation to the Bulgarian Presidency. I will never forget your party because of the good work you do. I can confidently say today that this Presidency will be very successful. Our entire political family is in your capital today. We are here to support our friend, what Europe does not know well about the Western Balkans - we have a common history, a common geography. And we have an interest in being a prosperous region. This is the purpose of today's meeting and the reason you have our full support. The Balkans has always been a priority for the EPP and I will always repeat it - the Balkans are within the borders of the European Union, Joseph Daul, President of EPP said.

Prime Minister Boyko Borisov hopes the summit will be successful and the EPP leader Joseph Daul belives that Borossov can help for the inclusion of the Western Balkan countries because he knows the region better.
