The demand for spa tourism in Bulgaria has increased 3 times in the recent years. This became clear at the opening of the International Tourist Fair "Vacation and SPA Expo" in Sofia on 14th of February. The fair is part of the programme of the Bulgarian Presidency and is under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourism.
The biggest tourist forum in Bulgaria brought together 380 companies from 22 countries. At the opening, Nikolina Angelkova, Bulgaria’s Minister of Tourism, pointed out that Bulgaria has the largest growth in spa tourism among the European countries and that this year it is expected to increase.
"The fair is exceptionally important for Bulgaria's tourism, which accounts for 13% of GDP, and we have revenues of BGN 7 billion for 2017, a growth of nearly 9% compared to 2016," Minister Angelkova said.
In addition to international participation, our biggest tour operators present new and attractive programmes for the upcoming tourist season.
"In SPA tourism we have no problems, but we need more advertising and therefore we are pleased with this fair, where everyone can come and see what we offer." Zlatko Zlatanov, Association of Hotel and Restaurant Managers Velingrad and the Western Rhodopes, said.
Together with the SPA companies and 50 municipalities, the rich palette of Bulgaria as a tourist destination with the possibility of equestrian tourism, cycling and eco-routes was presented.
This year, for the first time, the tourism fair has an official partner country. This is Serbia, one of the most preferred destinations for Bulgarian tourists in the recent years.
