Bulgarias President participated in Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony in Jerusalem

Nearly 50 leaders from all over the world participated in the ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland during World War II and International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The event took place on January 23 in Jerusalem. The guests included the presidents of Russia, France, Germany and the US vice President. Bulgaria was represented by President Rumen Radev.

“Remembering the Holocaust: Fighting Antisemitism” is the main message of the Fifth World Holocaust Forum. The purpose of the event is not only to honour the memory of the millions of victims, but also to draw the attention of the world community to the alarming manifestations of anti-Semitism. Organizers reminded that the world must not forget how far hate and extremism can reach. They called on world leaders to ensure that such a tragedy will never happen again.

Reuven Rivlin, President of Israel: Anti-Semitism is not limited to Jews. Anti-Semitism and racism are a cancer that is destroying the states within, and no society, no democracy has immunity against them.

The ceremony was held at the Yad Vashem Memorial Complex in Jerusalem. It contains evidence of the tragic fate of nearly 6 million Jews victims of Nazism in 1933-1945, as well as stories of people who risked their lives to save the persecuted Jews.

President Rumen Radev said that the Holocaust Remembrance Forum reminds us of one of the darkest and most shameful periods in human history, and that joint efforts are needed to combat anti-Semitism, xenophobia and hate speech.

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev: Bulgaria is attending with its head held high, as it did not allow even a single Bulgarian Jew to be sent to the death camps, and we can only be proud of this feat of the Bulgarian people, which is highly valued here. The Forum is also being held at a time of trouble and complex global security environment and will help, hopefully, strengthen dialogue and strengthen security.
