PM Borissov, US Secretary of State Pompeo discuss coronavirus situation

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov held a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over the COVID-19 pandemic situation. The two discussed the measures each of the two countries is taking to curb the spread of the virus, the government press office said on April 1.

Prime Minister Borissov presented to Pompeo the successful reorganisation of the Bulgarian industry, which for weeks now has been producing protective medical clothing, helmets, goggles and masks. The Bulgarian Prime Minister stressed in the conversation that the protective clothing meets certified standards and requirements for all those who work directly with the coronavirus.

The Bulgarian PM also pointed out a package of social and economic measures adopted by the government to support employers and workers. He stressed to Pompeo that Bulgaria puts efforts to preserve the employment of every citizen.

When the pandemic is over, Bulgaria, Europe and the US, which share the same democratic values and citizens' freedoms, together as strategic partners, will pull their countries out of the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus, Mike Pompeo said.

PM Borissov and Secretary of State Pompeo also exchanged views on medicines, medical supplies and diagnostic tests for COVID-19. The conversation revealed that scientists and specialists from the US are developing a vaccine for the virus and Bulgaria will be among the first countries to share it with. Bulgarian PM has requested PCR test kits.

Boyko Borissov and Mike Pompeo agreed that all countries have a duty to continue fighting the pandemic through mutual assistance and close cooperation in the exchange of successful treatment practices. "Each country has its own experience and knowledge, but if we share effective measures together we will be able to deal with the pandemic faster," Borissov said.
