Bulgaria’s cabinet allocates funds for Hemus motorway construction

The Cabinet allocated a billion and 400 million BGN for the construction of Hemus motorway, 113 million BGN for defence and 7 million BGN for culture. The funds for defence are intended for the repair of fighter aircrafts, combat helicopters, for the needs of the administration of the ministry of defence and for the restoration of the building of the Military Medical Academy.

Deputy Prime Minister Krassimir Karakachanov commented that the funds allocated for the repair of equipment do not cancel the existing orders for delivery of new combat units.

Boyko Borisov, Prime Minister: You know that years ago, Hemus motorway, I do not know for what reasons, but at the time of another government, was taken out of the possibility of financing under European programmes. We want to make this process irreversible so that no one can later say that there is no money.

The total length of Hemus motorway from Sofia to Varna is about 420 km. So far 170 km have been built and another 26 km between Yablanitsa and Buhovtsi to Belokopitovo are being built. After completion of the motorway construction, the travel time between the capital and the third largest Bulgarian city of Varna will be shortened. The motorway will also ensure connection with Varna port, which is key to trade with Russia, Ukraine and Turkey. Mayors from Northern Bulgaria thanked for the allocated funds.
