Bulgarian Mariana Kotzeva will be the New Director-General of Eurostat

The European Commission on 21st of February appointed Mariana Kotzeva as Director General of EU statistics agency Eurostat. This is the first Bulgarian citizen to be appointed in such a high position in the European Commission. EU Commissioner Gunter Oettinger commented that Bulgaria joined the EU 11 years ago and it time that a Bulgarian national take on a similar responsibility.

Since July 2012, Kotzeva is Deputy Director-General of Eurostat in Luxembourg. She is also the first woman to head the European Statistical Office. With almost six years of work experience at Eurostat and 10 years as Secretary General and then President of the National Statistical Institute in Bulgaria, Kotzeva has all the necessary skills and experience for her new position.

The European Commission also announced on 21st of February that Bulgarian Andriana Sukova will be the new Deputy Director-General of DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion.

Since August 2010, she has served as Director in DG Employment.

Sukova worked in DG Employment for over seven years, particularly dealing with the monitoring and implementation of programmes under the European Social Fund.

Sukova is a former Deputy Minister of Agriculture and member of the Cabinet of former Commissioner for Consumer Protection, Meglena Kouneva.
