Bulgarian authorities disrupt international drug trafficking ring

International drug trafficking ring was disrupted by the Bulgarian authorities, the prosecutor's office said on 17th of September. The group employed people, mostly low-income earners, to travel to the Dominican Republic and to perform the functions of the so-called drug mule.

Daniela Nacheva, Head of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office: They are housed in hotel apartments, where they were held for about a week and swallowed capsules with cocaine, between 80 and 100 capsules on average.

After taking the drug, the mules returned to Bulgaria via Bucharest. They were then taken to Stara Zagora where they delivered the cocaine. For each order they received between 3,000 and 5,000 BGN. The drug was designed for markets in Bulgaria and Hungary. On September 15, one of the drug traffickers felt unwell while in Portugal. It turned out he had swallowed 99 capsules containing over a kilogramme of cocaine.

Four people have been charged of participating in an organised crime group, including a woman.
