Agriculture Minister: Pork prices expectedly went up due to ASF

The rise in prices of pork in recent weeks is a normal and expected reaction after the African swine fever epidemic, not only in Bulgaria, but around the world as well, Bulgaria’s Agriculture and Food Minister Desislava Taneva said in Stara Zagora on December 5. She stressed that no new outbreaks were registered in the country at the moment. She is firm that the state cannot influence the producers of pork to keep the price unchanged. The agriculture minister said she could not predict whether there would be new price increase in the next weeks.

Desislava Taneva, Minister of Agriculture and Food: I cannot, of course, make predictions, but in any case, measures will probably be taken at European level. The question will be raised, but the truth is that the disease continues to spread. The disease continues to cause damages, the number of pigs affected is increasing, and consumption is undoubtedly continuing, causing this trend. On the other hand, it should be noted that the interest to produce pork in this situation is also high.
